ROTARY CLUB OF of STUART

Meeting of September 1st

Pledge & Prayer:   Hap Mills

Visiting Rotarians:  Charles DiPanni and his son Joe DiPanni came down from way up north.   Butch Bayley came to visit all the way from Palm City.  Hey Butch when is your club going to change their name to Palm City Sunrise??

Guests:  Stephen Leighton from Tom Rooney's office presented the club with an American Flag that was flown over the capital.   Okay guys now we need a flagpole.

Announcements:  Mike Crary announced that there will be a blood drive September 11th, Saturday at his new offices on US-1.

Jact Tartamella told us that they had a new member orientation for Paul Cain  and Lisa Grassam, Both Lisa & Paul said that they learned a great deal about Rotary.   But Lisa is still wondering where the water goes from the lighted bathroom sink.    AAH, you have to be an engineer for that one Lisa.   The Judge brought Jennifer Zelim, State Prosecuting Attorney and Chris Baemer, Public Defender to lunch today.

Today's program:   Dr Jim Harrell, a retired Ob-Gyn specialist, was introduced by Matt as an expert in Domestic Violence (DV).  Dr Harrell quickly pointed out he was perhaps an expert in the study of Domestic Violence and please don't think of the other interpretation.    Years ago when a doctor encountered a battered woman he simply treated her and sent her home.    When Lawton Childs was Governor of Florida he appointed Robin Thompson to head a commission charged with making recommendations to change the laws regarding domestic violence.   The commission made 225 recommendations, most of which were enacted into law.

While originally with our usual male chauvinist attitude it was thought that only women were victims of violence at home.  Now we know that about 85% of the victims are women and 15% are men.   Domestic Violence is defined as the mental or physical mistreatment or torture of a spouse.

Safe Space  provides shelter for DV victims and provides counseling and training to help victims get back on their feet.   But the recidivism rate is high and many victims return to their spouses for security and are right back into the violence.

Recently a major step forward has been a change in the law which makes the State the charging authority and not the victim.

There is a cycle to DV; people get together because things are good, then things start to deteriorate as one partner seeks to dominate the other.  Resistance, real or imagined causes anger which escalates to extreme mental and/or physical violence. Incidents of DV rise when the economy turns bad.

Today all hospital E.Rs.  must ask all patients about potential DV.

Sgt. at Arms:  Hap had several dollars, his airplane and he went flying together, and he told us about Reade Danson who is a terrific guy to know when your computer goes on the fritz.     After the geek guys said Hap's Lotus was too old to be accepted Reade said baloney (perhaps a little stronger) and hooked up Janes old hard drive to Hap's PC, transfer the old files to a CD and in 10 minutes had installed them all in her new Windows 7 computer.   Reade can be reached at 631-1067.    If you have any questions give Hap a call at 334 3650.

Jane had a one for the program and for her wonderful new PC.  Pat Tobin is happy that last weeks RYLA committee meeting went well.  Fran Beckstead was happy the Rotary Club and the Barn Theater received flags from Tom Rooney.    Pat Slattery had a SAD dollar, he hooked a GIANT Bluefin Tuna but lost it when the line broke.   We understand the fish has grown at least two hundred pounds since it got away.   Mike Crary for missed meetings and the flags  .Charlie DiPanni for being back and he has down a study of the cost of RC meals around the country.  They have RC up north that charges $30.00 and our club is the lowest he has found.   Charlie:  stay away from the RC of Palm Beach at the Breakers.   They charge $40.00.   Again your editor apologizes to those who had happy and sad dollars I haven’t included.     You guys talk considerably faster than I can write.

50/50:  Jane Mills had the winning ticket but alas could not find the joker and so will be consoled by a semifree lunch.

50/50  WINNER  OF  THE  WEEK
